Penelope's Test

Posted by dYe (Cambridge, United States) on 14 March 2007 in Miscellaneous.

For those of you who aren't familiar with Greek mythology, Penelope was the wife of Odysseus. When he left to fight in the Trojan war, she stayed faithful to him though his long absence, even though she was beset with many suitors. Eventually, her suitors got tired of being put off and insisted she choose one of them. She said she would marry the one who could string Odyseus' bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axe handles (a nearly impossible task).

Instead of axe handles, these are actually the sensors at the entrance of the Boston Public Library. However, the way they looked all lined up reminded me of this story. (The person checking out books gave me a very weird look when I snapped this shot. Guess it's one of the hazards of our craft...)
